The Lockerbie Cover

The cover used by the big powers to justify their actions against Libya, is the accusation that two Libyan nationals were involved in the downing of Pan Am flight 103 which exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland, five years ago.

The United States claims it has the evidence and demands that Libya hand over its citizens for trial in the West. Libya, as well as international lawyers representing the two men, has consistently said that a fair trial in Britain or America cannot be guaranteed. Alternately, they have offered to extradite the two accused to a neutral third country. The West has flatly rejected this offer.

As one un-named senior diplomatic source admitted, the United States, Britain and France are acting as "accuser, prosecutor, judge and executioner. Their refusal of a neutral investigation and, if warranted, a neutral trial is in line with their wish to nail Libya for a crime they know...the accused Libyans had nothing to do with."

Relatives of the victims of the Lockerbie disaster are understandably outraged over the increasing politicisation of the tragedy. Pam Dix, sister of one of the people killed on Flight 103, said "I am opposed to sanctions, where the innocent will almost certainly suffer. I am also opposed to any form of military intervention in Libya, as is the relatives' group UK Families Flight 103; my brother was killed on Flight 103 through an appalling act of terrorism - I should not wish to see Libyan families suffer in the way that ours have."

Rev. Patrick Keegans of Lockerbie's Holy Trinity Church stated, "As a private citizen of Lockerbie who lived through the disaster and its aftermath I find any form of sanctions against the people of Libya totally unacceptable."

Libya is being set-up for a total economic blockade, of the kind currently in place against Iraq. In the month of October alone, 3760 innocent Iraqi people died from malnutrition, diarrhoea and pneumonia. The result of the continuation of the UN sanctions against Iraq. Millions of Iraqi people are suffering incredible hardship.

People of goodwill must oppose the use of the UN Security Council as a defacto world government, run by the elites of the West. Today, Iraq, Somalia and Libya, tomorrow North Korea, Sudan or Cuba. Who will be next?

New World Order Targets Libya

On November 11, the United Nations Security Council, at the prompting of the United States, Britain and France, voted to tighten the embargo on the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. The new sanctions, which are scheduled to come into effect on December 1, freeze Libyan assets abroad, ban Libya from importing vital equipment for its oil industry, and strengthen the existing international air traffic sanctions imposed 18 months ago.

These latest measures were characterised by one diplomat as "ratcheting up the pressure" and set the stage for future tougher sanctions that would include an economically devastating embargo on Libya's oil exports.

The Melbourne Age reported on November 13 that the "tougher sanctions were the result of protracted negotiations among the big powers in which three of them - the US, France and Britain - struggled to craft a compromise that would not result in a veto by a fourth, Russia."

Russia was handsomely rewarded for its support. "Western diplomats yesterday added that in exchange for its support of the sanctions, Russia had received private assurances of additional financial aid from President Clinton, the French President, Mr Mitterand, and the British Prime Minister, Mr Major", noted the November 13 edition The Weekend Australian. "The three Western leaders wrote to Russia's President Yeltsin last month, urging him not to oppose the resolution."

The exemption of Libya's US$10 billion in oil exports, the basis of its oil dependant economy, brought sighs of relief from diplomats of several European countries, like Italy and Spain, that rely on Libyan oil exports.

Libya's UN Ambassador, Dr. Ali Ahmed Elhoudery, condemned the UN resolution pointing out that it "has no justification whatsoever... It is an attempt to destroy the Libyan economy by adversely impacting our people's only source of income. The draft's paragraphs include provisions which prove without a doubt the existence of a hidden agenda by its sponsors."

The use of economic and psychological blackmail by the UN Security Council, observers privately agree, betrays the hidden agenda of the big Western powers. This agenda aims at the destruction of the system of popular power in Libya and the establishment, in its place, of a compliant, pro-Western regime.

In short, the agenda of the United States, Britain and France, is that of their so-called New World Order, the suffocation of self-reliant, independent nations that oppose their evil designs. These actions, through the UN Security Council, are only the latest in a litany of terrorism, threats and provocations carried out by the West against Libya.

The use of the UN Security Council, in such a blatant manner, shows that the principle of international relations is "might makes right", and that we are in the age of a veritable world dictatorship in which no country is able to resist the big powers.
